| What makes the TORMEK different from other, less expensive wet grinders? |
The most important distinction between TORMEK and all the rest is the wide range of tool holders and accessories available. TORMEK has complemented a superior grinder with accessories that help you get the job done right, quickly and with a short learning curve.
But, even without the jigs, the TORMEK is still a better grinder than the "wannabes". Why? Well, look at the stone. The SG-250 Grindstone, made exclusively for TORMEK, is the best quality grindstone available. Its unique ceramic binder yields a stone of unmatched consistency. The porosity of the stone, the cohesion of the binder and the grain size are all matched for a perfect balance of fast cutting action and long stone life.
Add to the quality of the grindstone the following features: continuous duty rated motor, gearless drive, removeable water tray, plated rust resistant hardware and a patented angle setting gauge and you've got the best grinder on the market. But, that still isn't the whole story. Because TORMEK also incorporated a leather honing wheel on the other side of the grinder to let you finish the sharpening process right on the machine. |
| I have seen Japanese Water Stone replacement stones for the TORMEK, do I need these? |
In our testing, we found the Japanese Water Stones to be much softer than the SuperGrind Stone (meaning that they wear quickly). The coarser stones do not cut as fast, and the fine stones are only marginally finer that the SuperGrind Stone when graded with the SP-650. Also, one of the key features of using the SP-650 Stone Grader is that you are doing both fast grinding and fine grinding on the same stone, at exactly the same setting. Stones of different diameters will require resetting the bevel adjustments. Given the inconvenience of changing the stones and the settings, the danger of breaking a stone while not in use, and the exorbitant cost of buying several stones, we do not recommend these. The SuperGrind Stone and the Leather Honing Wheel give you a complete sharpening system. You really don't need anything else! |
| How is it possible to get two grits from the same grindstone? |
The TORMEK SuperGrind Stone is 220 grit through and through. But, it is made with an unique ceramic binder that allows you to polish the surface of the stone. In creating any abrasive, the size (or "grade") is determined by how fine the particles are. The particle size is determined by crushing and sieving the raw material. In using the SP-650 Stone Grader you are doing the same thing that a stone manufacturer would do. You are fracturing the aluminum oxide particles to approximately one fifth of their original size, but the ceramic binder holds the particles in place. This happens only at the extreme outer layer of the grindstone, results in a fine cutting 1000 grit finish on the stone, and has a very minimal effect on the diameter of the grindstone. You can quickly restore the aggressive cutting 220 grit by using the other side of the SP-650.

| I read that the TORMEK Scissors Jig only works on European scissors, is that right? |
WOOD Magazine's 1995 review of water cooled grinders was the first mention of this. It was wrong then, and is even more wrong now. The angle setting gauge supplied with the TORMEK in 1995 had only one angle for setting the scissors jig. Other scissors could be done, but you had to match the angle originally ground on the blades to the grindstone. But, now with the new adjustable angle setting gauge (WM-200 AngleMaster), you can measure the angle and set the jig up with the gauge, insuring perfect accuracy. |
| What length blades can I sharpen with a TORMEK and the Planer Blade Attachment? |
The SVH-320 Planer Blade Attachment indexes off of the back edge of the planer blade. The positive stop insures that you grind a perfectly straight edge. By indexing from the back of the blade, you can reposition the knife any number of times necessary to grind the full length of the blade. You can grind up to 13 inches without repositioning. Longer blades (even up to 36") require repositioning, but can be ground to amazing accuracy -- even by a novice operator.
