Pre eBay Sale

As you will be able to tell, the following is copy prepared for eBay listings. I thought I would give folks on the uw-photo mailing list and the DDNet forum a couple of days to buy these directly before I list them. The prices listed are about where I will place the reserves on the items. I will pay shipping on any item purchased before they go to auction.

XL-1 $2,000.00

This is the camera that started a revolution. The Canon XL-1 made its mark in history by changing the way corporate video, special occasions, and even feature films were shot. Even now, four years after its introduction, it is arguably one of the best camcorders on the market (if it was on the market). It was replaced a couple years ago by the XL-1s. This is the original XL-1. Click here to download the original corporate brochure. Click here to see the archived web pages about the XL-1.

This particular unit is in exceptional shape. I bought it second hand to shoot some training videos. The project is done and I don't anticipate having more work like this in the future. It includes all the original factory included items with one exception (no blank tape), and one change - the original "S" video cable has been replaced by a much higher quality Monster¨ brand "S" video cable. I am also including a Tiffen brand UV filter and two spare batteries, one small Canon and a huge Lenmar that will give you hours of shooting time. Here's the list: XL-1 camcorder body, 16x lens, remote control, stereo microphone, adjustable viewfinder, battery charger, hard-wired power supply, "S" video cable, composite video cable, neck strap, body cap, lens cap, lens rear cap, owner's manual, and the aforementioned filter and extra batteries.

I have set the reserve reasonably on this item. I will ship insured anywhere in the continental United States for a flat $20.00 fee. International bids are welcome, but shipment will be at your expense. PayPal is welcome, but a 3% service fee will be added to the final bid plus shipping. Personal checks are acceptable, but will be cleared before shipment. Money orders or cashier's check will insure immediate shipment upon receipt. I will accept escrow payment on this item, but to avoid the hassle and inconvenience, I will personally guarantee that it will not be D.O.A. Check my feedback. I sell high quality goods and they are as I describe them, always.

Optura $450.00

Canon shook up the video world in 1998 when they introduced this revolutionary little camera. It feels like an SLR, but it shoots progressive scan mini-DV video. Mini-DV is the format that virtually every personal computer in America (produced in the last couple of years) can edit. You can shoot your friends and/or kids and then cut the raw footage into tear-jerking or side-splitting mini-movies on your personal computer. If you have looked at the latest mini-DV cameras, you have seen some pretty steep prices. Yet, here is a camera that shoots the same format, with a lens far superior to the dime-sized pieces of glass in the new cameras and with a feature (progressive scan) that you will pay a high premium for in any new camera (if you can find it at all). I am also selling an underwater housing for this camcorder. If you buy them both, not only will you get a great underwater video system, but you will also get free shipping anywhere in the continental USA!

This particular unit functions perfectly, but has a couple of cosmetic faults. The control rods from the underwater housing have scarred the start/stop button and the button that switches between the viewfinder and the LCD. It is a little thing, but I mention it so that there are no surprises when you get your camcorder. Also, there are some extremely minor scratches on the LCD screen...you can only seem them from a certain angle when the LCD is off, they are unnoticeable when the screen is on. The auction includes all the original factory included items with one exception (no blank tape) and also adds three spare batteries, two factory and one after-market that is 2000 mAh compared to the factory battery's 1500 mAh and a Firewire (IEE-1394) cable to download the video to your computer. The original factory included items are: Optura camcorder, owner's manual, remote control, battery charger, DC hardwired power supply, composite video cable, "S" Video cable and neck strap.

Explorer MV1 $850.00

As underwater videographers, what we all want is a compact system that is easy to handle, doesn't take over our dive, and brings back great looking video. Though it is a few of years old, here was a great answer that can compete with any new system on the market today. Amphibico's Explorer MV1 housing for the Canon Optura is a video housing that is closer in shape to a camera housing than to other video housings. Yet it is even smaller than most camera housings. It's dimensions are 8.09" x 7.69" x 6.47" It is cast from 360 aluminum alloy, then hard anozided and powder coat painted for an amazingly durable and attractive appearance. It has a depth rating of 330 feet (100 meters). The Optura has a great flip up LCD screen, and Amphibico took advantage of that with an angled viewing window in the housing (with a built in shade) that allows shooting from a comfortable, controlled position. When you're shallow and the ambient light makes the LCD difficult to see, a touch of a button switches to viewfinder mode, where you can get up close and personal with your shot and check critical focus. This two viewing option system is unique and very useful. Almost every other video housing on the market requires you to use one method or the other, with no option to switch. The Explorer incorporates an amphibious stereo microphone, so you can capture the gurgle of your bubbles and the cracks of the snapping shrimp along the the banter on the dive boat before and after the dive. They also designed in a moisture alarm that will alert you if the housing is leaking. The housing allows control of the camcorders focus lock and exposure lock features as well as switching between video and still mode, start/stop recording, and zoom. Underwater video most often requires a color correction filter to counteract the filtering effect of water. The deeper you go, the more red needs to be added back in to keep your video from being a monochromatic blue. With most housings, you're limited to one filter throughout the dive, regardless of depth. Amphibico borrowed an idea from the film industry and built a 4" x 3" filter holder into their port system. You can drop in filters of varying intensity or shoot without a filter without unscrewing anything. The filters slide in place and lock with a reassuring click. The auction includes Amphibico's 20% and 30% filters. Though the housing is out of production, the port system on the Explorer is exactly the same as what Amphibico uses on most of their line. Their line of filters and other port accessories is completely compatible with this housing. For best results, use the wide angle port most of the time. If you are going after close ups of tiny critters, switch to the flat port before the dive.

NOTE: The last picture above is for visual reference only. The Optura camcorder IS NOT part of this auction. Hit the link for my other auctions to find the Optura auction. If a lucky bidder wins both auctions, I will pay shipping anywhere in the continental USA. This particular unit is in exceptional shape. I bought it second hand for my wife, who would rather follow me around and help me find stuff to shoot than shoot on her own. It is just too nice a system to put in the back of the closet. As shown in the shot below, this auction is for much more than just a housing. This is a turn key set-up. Just add an Optura and start shooting! The auction includes the Explorer MV1 housing, both flat and wide angle (.55x) ports, 20% and 30% filters and two o-ring sets. The glass in both ports, the viewfinder window, the LCD viewing window and both filters are all scratch-free.

Titan $1,500.00

If you want a digital SLR camera to shoot underwater, but you don't want the confusion and hassle of interchangeable lenses and ports, here is the answer. The Olympus E-20 is a 5.0 megapixel Single Lens Reflex camera with a built in zoom lens that is equivalent to a 35-140mm lens on a 35mm camera. Light & Motion builds an amazing housing for this camera, the Titan E-20. The Titan E-20 was the first housing to offer Light & Motion's revolutionary R.O.C. strobe control system. You can control the output of your strobes over an amazingly smooth curve with the touch of a fingertip. Click here for Light & Motion's page on the Titan E-20. The Titan offers controls over almost every camera function, including macro mode, auto/manual focus switching, exposure compensation, mode switch, media switching, aperture, shutter speed, zoom, the full menu system, and the LCD backlight. The only camera functions that I have found that the housing does not control is on/off and the built in flash (which is a moot issue since the camera is inside the housing). The shutter can be triggered from either control handle or with the manual shutter release, which falls very naturally under your right index finger. Both control handles also have an AF Lock button that will focus the camera and hold focus until you hit one of the three shutter releases. The locks for the back door are very secure and easy to use and the double o-ring seal insures a secure water-tight environment for your camera.

As I learned from Jim Church, I have added "idiot labels" to the housing. They are there to remind me which control does what, and in which direction. The tape Jim taught me to use is completely waterproof, but if you don't like them, they will leave no residue whatsoever if you remove them. The same is true for the index marks you see on the two controls on the back of the housing. If a lever is in contact with a button on the camera, the camera won't do a thing. A quick glance at these index marks will tell you that the levers are not engaged and you're ready to shoot. The marker paint I used to create the indexes will come off with a fingernail, if you decide you don't need it. Unlike any other digital SLR camera, the E-20 allows you to use either the viewfinder or the LCD or even both. Light & Motion has added a magnifier to the viewfinder window that makes it very easy to see. The housing has two Nikonos bulkheads installed and I have added the base mount for the Light & Motion Sun Ray Mod Light to the housing as well. The front port is designed for the addition of wet mount wide angle and macro adapter lenses. These lenses are being auctioned separately. Hit the link for my other auctions to find them. If the lucky bidder gets two or more items, I will pay shipping on the entire purchase anywhere in the continental USA.

As shown above, the auction includes the Titan E-20 housing, owner's manual, spare R.O.C. battery, spare o-ring kit, spare handle o-ring kit, port plugs, spare handle mounts, two containers of o-ring grease, and the spanner used to mount and unmount the handles. Also included, but not pictured is a plastic port cap. The glass on every part of the housing is flawless. I can't quite call the condition of the housing flawless, but you will be hard pressed to find the few scratches that are there. The housing is finished by hard anodizing and clear coating. It is amazingly tough and scratch resistant. There are a couple of scratches, but you will have to hunt to find them. You won't find a cleaner used housing on the market.
