In reviewing our customer service calls, I found that the most common problem that new TORMEK
owners faced was trying the keep the ends of chisels and plane irons square with the side of the tool.
We have put our suggestions for maintaining square edges into a PDF download. You can
view it on-screen, or print it for reference.

On page 106 the Handbook recommends impregnating the leather honing wheel with thin machine oil. In our
experience, you'll have better success with mineral oil (you'll find it in the drug store). Mineral oil
does not dry out the leather and does not attack the glue bond between the leather and the plastic wheel.
Since it doesn't dry out, you will not need as much as suggested. I would recommend oiling the leather only
a couple times each year.
With the water and abrasives that are present around this machine, TORMEK has chosen nylon bearings rather
than ball bearings. Steel bearings would be under constant attack from corrosion's two biggest allies. The
nylon is almost impervious to them. If you get a high pitched squeal coming from your machine, use a little
teflon lubricant (Tri-Flo or Slick-50 One-Lube) on the two nylon bearings. Better yet, don't wait for the
squeal. Field strip your machine (take the stone off and the shaft out) and clean and lube the bearings
every 6 months or so. Don't worry about it too much if you forget, though. A new set of bearings is only $6.00
if they happen to wear out.
